Mists & Sprays 101

posted on: 4.16.2012

Mists and Sprays are definitely one of my most used scrapbooking items/tools. I also have quite a few different brands & quite a few colors of each brand (I'm so lying I have way to much!). But I really do use them a lot which is always a good sign. I do get this question quite a bit because some people don't want to invest in all the different sprays, they would rather stick to one and build a collection off that one brand. Since I'm that one shopper who has to have everything, I am here to help! I made a lovely informational video below which shows me spray the mists and talk about each one (for some odd reason the end got cut off). Below the video I have some written info so make sure to scroll down even more!

Tattered Angels :: Tattered Angels basically started the spray mist. They started off with the plain glimmer mist which was a huge hit but have blossomed into multiple other scrapbooking products. I love there mist because it comes in a variety of colors, its quality is amazing and i just plain love it. The original glimmer mist is somewhat transparent but now they have a chalkboard mist which is more opaque. They also came out with glimmer glaze & glimmer glam which are basically chunky and fine glitter paints.

Lindy Stamp Gang :: Lindy Stamp Gang has released an affordable and quality product that is wonderful for mixed media and scrapbooking. The moon shadow mists are walnut based inks (brown vintage) with a colored glimmer inside which when sprayed produces a shimmery colored brown vintage style mist. The starburst sprays are just like glimmer mist (Glimmer + Fixative). Lastly they have also produced Color Shots & Ink Pots. These little shots of liquid goodness can be used to paint with.

Ranger :: This product is a must! You can spray over any scrapbook paper, flower, embellishment or finished product to receive a beautiful shimmer. This color (heirloom gold) will produce a completely transparent color but have a beautiful brown tone shimmer.

Smooch :: Smooch is a lovely product as well. This product comes packed with glimmer in cute glass tubes. If you are looking for shimmer and shine I would defiantly purchase the large "Vanilla Shimmer" mist. This product is wonderful and can be used in so many different ways.

Studio Calico :: I LOVE LOVE LOVE this product! If you are looking for a mist w/out and glimmer this is the way to go! This mist comes in a variety of modern and pretty colors. These mists are a bit more opaque than a normal mist and can be paired together so beautifully.

Here is a color chart in which I have sprayed with different types on mists and sprays. The video probably does it more justice but you get the idea.

What is you favorite mist or spray (leave a comment)?
Drew

  2. What a great video to help people that don't have much experience with these mists! It's also fun to try to mix up your own. Now, can you explain the difference between Opaque and transparent to me, lol?!!!!!! You're so great with all of this--you are going to go so far in life, Drew!

  3. Thanks a bunch!
Opaque = more bold, you cannot see through it such as milk,
Transparent = see through, usually lighter such as water

  4. Hey Drew, thanks for this. I don't own that many sprays because I haven't been all that impressed. I don't do cards (anymore) I do mixed media art. What I'd like to know is are any of these, or other brands permanent? ie won't react when anything wet is applied on top? Thanks!

  5. Great tutorial Drew! Love seeing the different brands and how they work. Can you give a brief explanation of how to get the bigger dotted look from a spray rather than the full mist? Do you take the sprayhead out and flick it at the paper? I've tried and it doesn't work well for me. Any tips?

  6. @Marina -
I would stick a paintbrush in the bottle of mist and splatter it that way. It normally gives larger splatters :) Hopefully that helps

    @Anonymous -
I would go with the studio calico. I havent had a problem with it coming off after heat setting :)

    Hope that helps

  10. I can't answer your question because I do not own any sprays! Yes, I just said that, hanging my head in shame. After watching your video, though I think I will start with Mr. Huey. I think I would like it because it has no shimmer....I think.

  13. So far I've only tried the TA Glimmer Mists and a few of the Oct Afternoon Sprinklers. I think I like the non-glittery Sprinklers the best. I would like to get a few of the Mister Hueys to try also. Oh, and I have an older Tsukineko Spray Walnut ink that I haven't used in a long time, but if I remember, it sprayed really well and left a matte color, no shine. Thanks for posting this information Drew. Maria

  30. I love using distress reinkers to make my own sprays in mini mister bottles. I also just bought the entire line of Dylusions by Ranger and I am crazy about them. They are nice because they don't have shimmer and are really bright fun colors. I also have a few Color Wash sprays by Ranger in the Adirondack color line, they are different because they are permanent on fabric if you heat set them. They are super intense colors. Thanks for sharing your video, it was interesting and inspired me to subscribe to your blog and YouTube videos.
